I will be keeping this book for the rest of my career. It hits on all the key concepts of supply chain management.
The authors brings to the table insights from years of experience in supply chain management in simple terms with practical examples. Very well written and gives non-practitioners a head start on thinking about SCM strategy. The book resolves around 5 core disciplines for supply chain managementCore Disciplines:1.View Supply Chain Management as Strategic2. Develop an end to end Process Architecture3. Design your organization for performance4. Build the right collaborative model5. Use metric to drive BusinessThe five disciplines provide the foundation for supply chain excellence and are the levers that allow your supply chain to increasingly contribute directly to the growth of both revenue and profit. Many companies have already made significant progress in putting these disciplines in place and are reaping major benefits as a result.Key Points:-Think critically about why you need to operate a certain way.-Without shared objectives, it don't invest in end-to-end processes-Complexity is the single greatest cause of poor ROI in SCM.-The SCOR model provides a scorecard for SCM targets-Look beyond any technical solutions-Consider the "softer" factors of your culture and environment.-Poor communication-often the culprit for plans not progressing-Your supply chain design should incorporate the next-generation characteristics of transparency, flexibility, and simultaneity.
Finally, a book that explains supply chain strategy WITHOUT THE HYPE AND BUZZ WORDS!! The authors were right...this book should've been written years ago coz it will definitely enlighten those trying to unravel the intricacies in crafting a supply chain strategy. This book emphasizes the vital link between business objectives and supply chain strategy. The 5 core principles and its practical applications are discussed opposite real life examples of world class companies like Eli Lilly, Autoliv and the DoD, "the largest supply chain in the world." The frequent reference to the SCOR Model in the book only emphasize the power of the model in crafting and executing the 5 core principles the authors talk about. DON'T LEAVE FOR THE OFFICE WITHOUT THIS!!
This is the first book I've found that discusses supply chain management in a way that makes it relevant and understandable for the C-level executive. And the examples prove that real ROI value can be created by looking more carefully at a company's supply chain. As an operations executive myself, I've had trouble getting other members of my company's executive management team to pay sufficient attention to supply chain issues. The five core disciplines from this book are easy to explain, and people now understand what we need to do to make our supply chain a competitive advantage.I was happy to find a book that includes numerous, practical examples from companies that I can relate to and advice I can actually use.
Finally, a book that approaches supply chain management from the perspective that it is an integral part of a well-formed business strategy. By using solid examples, the authors illustrate how businesses can use strategic supply chain management to drive competitive advantage. In addition, the authors outline a practical framework to better manage the supply chain.I recommend this book for supply chain professionals looking for a way to simply and effectively illustrate the competitive power of supply chain management. This book is also a must read for the non-supply chain executive looking for a way to tap into the power of supply chain management.
This book is based around 5 core principles that the authors suggest form the bais of competitive supply chain strategy. In a clear and non-jingoistic style they set out their case, illustrated along the way with many industry examples and quotations. The several case studies from leading industrial companies and the Department of Defense bring the subject matter to life.An easy to read book for the non-practitioner, and for the practitioner and aspiring practitioner - a book full of practical insight.
The authors show good command over the subject. There are several key aspects mentioned in the book which are not obvious to everyone. The authors stumble on getting the right message out. In short, it's a very long book to cover a small subject.
This book has a lot of stuff in it. It's got a good overview of how to look at your supply chain starting with the supplier of your supplier, and going through to the customer of your customer. It's got a lot of real world examples, and each of the six chapters ends in a 10-page real world case study of a large corporation. However, I just couldn't get into it, even though I read it cover to cover. This was a hard book to trudge through, probably because of its very narrow target audience. This book is written to the level of Senior Vice President of International Operations at a $800+ million company. It's at a pretty high level and maybe that's why it was so hard to read. With only a few minor modifications, this book could be called: "World Class Marketing" or "Quality Improvement: New Directions." It's technically about Supply Chain Management, but it's at such a very high level.
