The artist-authors of this book have promising qualities: impressive education, valuable experiences, interesting resumés. Rosalind Davis is a graduate of The Royal College of Art and Chelsea College of Art, has exhibited internationally, and has worked with over 600 artists as a curator. Annabel Tilley has exhibited widely, teaches, and has been shortlisted for impressive prizes.When I first flipped through their book, it appeared intriguing, although it was smaller than the standard volume at 5" x 7 3/8" x 1" thick, it seemed to offer the reader the best of both substance and style. It was only once I sat down to read it that the problems became obvious.But first, the good. The cover is creatively designed, with a compelling quote from Graham Crowley indicating it is “an absolute must-have.†A quick flip through the 224 pages reveals a lot of work has been done with the typesetting and graphic design. Large fonts have been used to dramatic effect with virtually every page receiving some special treatment.Then, the bad. Much of the test is unreadable in regular or low lighting. A highly pigmented blood-orange paper was used for many text pages, printed with thin small-font type that blends into the murky page. In full sunlight, the text reappears, but I do most of my reading in the evening in a comfortable chair and had to strain to make out the meaning. This misery even with my reading glasses on! Totally unnecessary. The larger font pull quotes often are not the best of the text and appear to have been emphasized even though they don’t deserve it. So, form in that area appears to have overwhelmed content.The content, when I could make it out, varied from interesting at best to pedestrian at worst. It was rarely unique and stimulating. Some of the case histories were mildly engaging. There was no essential technical information. I did an internet search to see if I could find similar business advice for authors and it was both plentiful and more readable.Overall, my impression is that this work is far from the best these authors could have produced. And its failure to distinguish itself in content makes the errors of form unforgiveable. Sadly not recommended.
This is the first book I have read on the topic. Intended for after attending art school, when trying to figure out how to live life, make art, and survive. Geared towards selling art and being an active artist, and taking art seriously. A ton of practical information is given, solid information without fluff or fillers. The authors are skilled at wriring with brevity and are direct in their communication. There is no beating around the bush. The attitude is "can do" but not empty platitudes or blowing sunshine up your. Sometimes suggestions and recommendations on one page would take weeks or short work done daily. I read it cover to cover and can’t think of what possibly may be missing. Thorough book with no nonsense advice, if you want to be a professional artist you need to know all this stuff.The book breaks up the nonfiction info with case studies and opinions from variois artists so you get to hear differeent perspectives. There is no one right path and the issue of working a day job or teaching full or part time for survival income and sometimes for creative inspiration is discussed.The book is by UK artists and the copyright info is Eurocentric not USA. Also there are some color photos of artworks. The font was small for my middle aged eyes. See photo for chapter list which is easier to skim than if I tramscribe the topics. Hardcover book with sewn binding and thick mayye paper. This is a great resource. Read it if you are curious about moving from being a hobbyist to a professional artist or as the title says after art school. Honestly this should be taught in art school. Love It = 5 Stars. The other major book on this topic is Art / Work by Davis which is USA centric and was just revised in 2017 which makes it more relevant than the older editions as the Internet, social media, and selling online is included. READ BOTH is what I recommend.

Authors Rosalind Davis and Annabel Tilley take a similar approach in "What They Didn't Teach You in Art School." You can go to Yale, Columbia, UCLA, Cranbrook, etc. (insert random art school here)... the point is, you are going to be on your own in the hard-scrabble world of art. Artists, musicians, filmmakers, writers all face the "art" of survival if they are going to be successful.Much of the information might seem to be basic, or rudimentary, in this book and perhaps you could just as easily Google info on CVs, blogging, websites, studios, etc., as they pertain to your art career. However, I think WTDTYIAS makes a nice book for the graduate or thoughtful reminder for the starving artist. The book design is nice, albeit the small font choice which others have pointed out (8pt font size?) but I would recommend as a gift for the aspiring artist to add to their bookshelf; they may need all the encouragement they can get.Bottom Line:Experience, luck and success are all relative, so you may, or may not, find this book useful depending on what stage of your career you are in.
